Under the Boardwalk (*)

Phillip Island, Australia

I found these little guys hiding out under the boardwalk. They are Fairy Penguins, found only in Australia and New Zealand. I was thrilled to get this shot, as I have never seen one outside of a zoo before today. They stand about 12 inches tall, and I had a gap of about 8 inches to work in, lying on my stomach and pointing the camera in near total darkness. These tiny penguins are wild and live in the seas around the SE coast of Australia.
They are losing their old feathers, and you can see a pile of feathers around their feet.
This photo may not win any awards, but I am totally over the moon with it!

Beautiful shot. There's something about these birds that is cute, almost childish...

I can understand why you were thrilled with getting this shot. Now, if you just had a G3 (or other G series) with a swivel LCD monitor, you would not not have had to lie on your stomach!! :-) Or does your camera have the swivel feature? Mary Anne

Great, I love the vivid white chests & feathers on the ground. We have fairy penguins here too. Most of my pics. of them are of a head sticking out of a hole. Neil
