This one is done with Photoshop Elements. It's quite easy to do with the layers of PS: just cut out the part that should be in the frame, place it in a new picture and add the frame to that. Then copy it back into the original picture as a new layer, increase the size of the canvas a bit to fit the frame as well and move it so it fits exactly over the original picture (reduce the opacity a bit to best see when the two images overlap).
Then all that remains is to use the eraser-tool and erase the frame where the object should poke out of the frame and change the background of what's out of frame to match the background colour of the page you're displaying it on.
I've never thought of going "outside the frame" like that. It certainly gives the photo some additional "punch." What program did you use? --flowersand

Is it possible to remove the automatically added frame around the pictures? The effect is lessened somewhat by it I think.
