Young and old*

Cape May, New Jersey, USA

My daughter and her great-grandmother, who were 95 years apart in age, and whose lives overlapped for a year. Both very dear to me, so this shot is about as emotional as my photography gets.

Pardon if you already saw this in the current Canon DSLR exhibition.

Thanks for the suggestion iso3200 (and the difference of opinion, Kevin). I think you're right about losing the watch. In this particular instance neither subject was very eager to be photographed, so it was a quick capture without a lot of opportunity for preparation or reshooting. But a good thought to remember for the future nonetheless.

I think that the watch reinforces the theme of time: the differences in time conveyed by the obious differences in age, and the implied passing of time.

I too really like this one, it's obviously a sentimental piece and I think it fits the theme well without your explanantion. , From a purely (*) point of view, if this were to be more of a set up shot, I would have taken it without the watch, and the fingertip is slightly cut off in the frame. Sorry - I just keep getting drawn to the watch! I wish I'd been in a position to take such a pic within my own family.

I did see this in the CSLR challenge, and it's one of my favourites there, and here too. Simply beautiful! My 4 children, aged from 19 to 9 still have three great-grandparents alive and well. Your photo makes me appreciate how truly fortunate they are.
