Appreciate all the comments--whether they were about the photo or not. It's always good to learn something new. And here's one more plug for b & w: the "noise" looks more like film grain and is much less objectionable than it is with color shots. However, I would have cropped off the left side were it not for the constraints of this challenge.

When/if I upgrade it will likely be in that 50D and up class. A full frame would be nice but not for a hobbiest with lens considerations. -Doug

I'm sure our Wives will be sympathetic about our Iso problems & bless our decision to upgrade Doug. I might splash out on a 7D, will you wait for the new 60D before deciding what to get?

Thanks Rod. The option to go beyond the native ISO1600 for a bump in shutter speed might just be reason enough to upgrade my camera. -Doug

I love the black & white and I'm not surprised at the lack of grain with no processing esp sharpening. The resizing to posting size serves to reduce the noise significantly in my experience. -tv

The 40D only has natural Iso to 1600 Doug but in the custom functions we can turn on the Iso 3200. The Iso 3200 on the 40D isn't done through the sensor the camera just takes an underexposed Iso 1600 picy & manipulates with in camera software to make the exposure look right. Doing it this way produces more noise than Iso done through the sensor but it does clean up with noise removal.
You can do the same with your camera by shooting at Iso 1600 & adjusting the exposure in the Raw converter.

It has a great amount of contrast for being SOOC. Very nicely done. It is very clean for a ISO1600 shot. Too bad they couldn't give us 350D and 400D users a firmware upgrade that would give us a ISO3200 option. It would likely result in a fair amount of noise but it would allow for emergency lighting conditions. -Doug

A great start to this challenge. My instinct always tells me to start shooting in b/w jpg + raw for challenges like these. And this shot just reinforces that feeling.

I agree that this is Very Good! I am surprised about the iso not causing a problem but it looks great.

I just tried to add your name Mary Anne but I got the read only message. I tried the ctrl F5 thingy but it didn't help.
This came out fantastic as I don't think it can be improved with PPing, it looks just right as it is.

It's right out of the camera...no cropping or anything. And I still can't edit the photo to add my name, etc.

Excellent picy especially for Iso 1600. Did you do any noise removal?
