Thanks Tom:-) Yes I remember. I suppose we can't call them the good ole days either as I'm quite liking the ease of digital.....Maybe just an age thing.

Remember the old days with a non-SLR when you had to be mindful of letting the camera face the sun too long or risk burning a hole in the focal plane shutter. Nice light and comp. -tv

Thanks Penny (I left comments) & Mary Anne:-) As long as no one looks at the sun through the viewfinder & making sure it's completely blocked by something it should be safe a.

Well done, Rod. With your clear explanation, I'll bet you've inspired more than one person to try similar shots into the sun (or other light).

by the way, I worked on my flowers and church if you would care to tell me what you think. Penny Street

Like I said, Perfect. And you proved it. Too bad you're not a churchgoer.

Thanks Penny, Jano & Steve:-) No I don't have any filters this isn't quite what it seems. The round white part is just the outer glow of the sun as the sun was completely behind the steeple, otherwise it would have blinded me & worse give me lens flare:-) I took two picys, the first as per the meter & then I overexposed the second one to keep better detail in the church & then darkened & lightened areas in PS. I used the second overexposed picy. You can see in the two unprocessed picys below that the white part is not so defined as round, it's more diffused. The roundness happened when I darkened the overexposed picy. I was lucky as this side of the church picked up some light from a white tin roof about 4 meters away on the right so I could bring up the warm light near the downpipe.
Metered as per camera

Opened up about 1 stop

This is great Rod - how on earth did you manage to capture this simply glowing sun??? is it an ND filter that did the trick? jano

Always never done. I don't know how it was possible to capture the sun this way without a 3 inch thick ND filter. I'm going to have to try it out but I don't think that the built-in G( ND filter can give me this much leverage against the Texas Sun.

Very fine image... ethereal, I'd say. Penny Street
