Cloud Cuckoo Land?? Well put. Well, so far as rising debt and artificial property increases we are all in pretty much the same boat, I think.
Thanks for the info. Penny Street

Since the decline of heavy industries in the 60's & 70's the British economy has been kept afloat by North Sea Oil & and the financial activities of the City of London. The rest of the country has been living in Cloud Cuckoo Land of rising debt and an artificially increasing property market. Take away the oil (its due to run out in less than 20 years) and the financial sector, which is in massive trouble and the UK is a Third World Nation!
As far as Llanelli is concerned its not a tourist area, I just don't know how people survive. I was born here and we still maintain a house here as its now a pleasant place to visit and chill out - compared to London.
I think with Green Fees at US$70/day not many locals can afford to play on the golf course which is rated 6th in Wales.
So it is locals who play golf here or is this course famous enough that it attracts vacationers and/or professionals?
And if the town is cleaned up how come more business hasn't moved in to replace the steel industry? (recently, I can understand it's the economy but you mentioned a thirty year period). How long have you been there?

Penny you say I live in a lovely place - if you had written that thirty years ago, I would have thought you were being sarcastic. :)
The golf course is built on the site of amongst other things: a steel works, chemical plant, scrap yard, etc. While the Sandy Water Park is built on the site of another steel works, a foundry and a steel sheet works.
Now it all looks great,we have fresh air and cycle tracks, wild life and recreation amenities. What is missing? Jobs! When I left school there was a choice of work, today you have either got to be bright enough to go to University (then move away to find work), or stack super market shelves.
