Thanks Jano & Dougy:-) Gawd can you ever imagine me doing a tutorial on PS Jano:-) I'm sure the way I do things is very clunky & unsophisticated. I think using layers is the way to go but it seems like too much trouble & trying to remember how to do it is a bugger too. The B&W converter in the Image--Adjustments menu seems really intuitive for dummies like me:-)

Those streaks of light art fantastic and work spledidly with the center stripe composition. Then the trace of clouds on the right balances out the larger portion of trees on the left. Oh, and lets not forget your trademark texture in the ground. -Doug

Really nice Rod - love your tutorial on CS4 . I just got CS4 so need to play more. I would like to see just a little bit more detail on the background of the road... but that's just me. jano

Gawd I forgot me Debi Webi. Thanks Debi:-) Don't forget Debi that your road is in exotic India & mine is just in a boring suburb of Brissie a:-)

Thanks YB & Tommy:-) I think the way the young hoons drive YB the road might be safer than the footpath:-) I always do my Raw conversions in DPP Tommy & normally don't do any adjustments & save them as 16bit Tiffs, I then take them into CS4 to work on. I've found the B&W converter in CS4 is quite good because it shows about 5 or 6 sliders of different colours so I can hover my mouse over the picy, say on the sky & the blue colour slider sort of blinks so I can lower that slider to darken or lighten the sky. You can go all round the picy doing this & it can save time not having to dodge & burn so much. It's not foolproof as with quite a few picys only the red slider will blink no matter where you hover & it will darken or lighten the whole picy. Once in a while you could hover over say the white line in this picy & just lighten any whites in a picy. I didn't get much help from the converter with this picy so I had to do the good old dodge & burn. The noise showed up when I tried to lighten parts of the sky a bit. I then went back to DPP & converted to B&W there.

Are you trying to get yourself killed? :)

Interesting that CS4 gave more noise than DPP Raw. Something to keep in mind, if I can... Your BWs are always so clean that I hang on every hint but forget most of them. -tv

Its not fair to post your magnificent road next to mine - Debi

Thanks Penny, Techo & Tommy:-) I converted this to B&W in the Canon DPP Raw converter & used the Red filter which darkened the dark part of the sky & let the hint of sun rays show better. I normally do my B&Ws in CS4 B&W converter but I got too much noise in the sky. I took my exposure mainly on the sky, about 2/3 sky & 1/3 road in evaluative mode. I kept it on half click & put the camera down nearly on the road with it just pointing up a bit. I didn't try looking through the viewfinder because this was in the middle of the road & I didn't want to lay on me tummy as the teenage hoons score near maximun points if they run over an old bloke, they get maximum points for running over old ladies:-)
Here's the colour & B&W picys as they come out of DPP as Tiffs, the colour one is as shot & the B&W one has the red filter from DPP. I then played with the B&W one in PS mostly dodging & burning & a slight S curve in the curves tool.

Nicely controlled excesses in this one - actually quite impressive fantastic effects suitable to the Oz story - especially the unearthly light rays strangely parallel emanating from the Emerald City or maybe o-u-t-e-r space. The freaky bleached out clouds seem to be glowing from the radiation. You have developed an art of glowing street markings but this is the ultimate quick transition from extreme black to white providing a radioactive glow. -tv

Really like the contrast here with the elements of black and white. The dark silhouettes of the trees really contrast well against sky with white whiff of cloud and the white road marks. I even see a hint of the sun's rays?. And we also have some of the texture of the road sticking out. All cool elements.

Was much PP involved in darkening out the trees like that, or was it mainly the exposure?

(I can't help myself)
It's funny how I never associated this song with Michael Jackson. The picture is just relaxed and odd enough to fit right in with the tune. I like it.
