Appeal in Brass

Okinawa, Japan

This is an old Turkish prayer bowl, although I'm a little hazy on its use now. (I seem to recall that it was filled with water and used to pray for good health.) I'm not sure what languages are engraved on it (if they really are languages), but the one closest to the center looks like Arabic or Ottoman Turkish. I don't recognize the one running around the side of the bowl, and there's a third smaller script that looks like a personal message along the rim.

Thakns for your answer on that....what a neat technique. I guess that can be applied to a bunch of things. Thanks for sharing. I like the bowl, and think the photo is great!

Aaron, I'm not exactly sure what a low-key shot is, but if it refers to lighting, then yes, maybe it is since I set it up so only parts of the engraving were highlighted. The bowl was photographed on black construction paper that still had a shine to it when I downloaded the print so I made the background uniformly black in Photoshop. I selected the entire background with the Magic Wand, contracted the selection, feathered the selection, set Background to black (should do first, actually), then hit delete. The background will then become totally black. Helen

Now, do you call this a low key shot? (trying to get a handle on some od the terms) How do you take it with such a black background? Hope it is ok to ask. Thanks, AaroNZ
