7th Place - Selling Rubbish by kyagudin

Singapore

You can often meet here old people, mostly women, collecting rubbish - cans, plastic bottles, paper etc ... for sell.
For them the cents they get for the deal is important if no vital part of their earnings.
This old Lady was may be 90 plus. She moved very very slow and even didn't notice that I was photographing her.

Wonderful contrast of simple existence & increased complexity,f which depends on the former. (too deep?)
aka; Nice shot!

The woman's exaggerated posture and features could be a cartoonists satirical comment on modern society. Sadly it's not just a cartoonists image. Well captures Konstantin. -tv

This is heartbreaking to me Konstantin. Seeing the effluent country in the background and here is this poor humpbacked old woman having to recycle for a bit of money to live on. A very sad comment on our societies that don't take better care of our elderly. :-( CJ

Aam, Penny, COA - thanks a lot for your comments!
Penny, there are some 'collector' places here where you can bring your rubbish to get some cents.
Aam - I like shadows as well as the full and rich range of colours in the picture. This particularly photo was difficult to process while the main subject is in shadow (shot around midday - the sun was in zenith and the area was filled with the light). I used shadow/highlights to slightly lift shadows (up to 5) but the black is still clipping. Basically, lifting the shadows was very subtle, I spend most time darkening background which was far too bright.
COA - blurring background ? Some how I wanted to have all these three levels sharp (different 'faces' of Singapore). But may be you are right.

In general, I agree with you that I 'overplay' with PP from time to time and I'am very thankful to all of you when you point me on this. We are very subjective to our own pictures and the view from the 'side' is very helpful. This is the main idea of posting pictures in the challenge, doesn't it ?

The content and presentation of this is wonderful. I would like to see more subject isolation via a somewhat blurred background. As is the background is so sharp it looks like it could be a movie backdrop. -COAmature

Perfect for the challenge - and perfect for me because it's different!!
Honestly, Konstantin, I would say that recently your photos seem more processed than they used to be but this one is less so. As I said, I like it.

Btw, why do you (Kristian and Brent) don't like shadows. They are beautiful. They define things, they give a photo a natural look, they make a two dimensional media look real. Ok, I'll stop now :)

Not sure I would call it perfect. Some of Kristian (and Brent) photos look too processed. They are lifting the shadow areas to the point that the photos don't look natural to me. But that's just me :)

Very touching photo. I thought Singapore is a rich country. What gives.
