I didn't dodge or burn the face at all Tommy as I can remember. Me camera is set on evaluative metering so it averages the scene, if I want the picy say darker I normally aim the camera towards a lighter scene (opposite for a lighter picy) then lock the exposure recompose & shoot. As you can see from the colour picy below which has only been sharpened there's not much of a shadow under the hat. Also it's winter down here & this was taken at 10-30 in the morning so maybe the contrast wasn't that great. I can't believe it was anything clever I did, if it was I've forgotten how to repeat it:-)

I'm looking at the details and well-controlled contrast of his face under the hat's bill. I guess I still don't understand the digital pp technology but it seems impossible to me to get low contrast in sunny circumstances and the face shadow would have to be dodged. Isthatwotyoudid? Well done. -tv

Enviably perfect bw on my monitor. Great portrait in the classic/modern sense. Perfectly centered eye goes back to the Renaissance. Squared up face very modern. The half smile seems so transitory is a way that grabs attention lest it be lost. And what control over contrast - - - howdidyoudoit? -tv

Thanks Doug:-)

The b/w is full of life and perfectly sharp. Excellent. As long as he sticks with that guitar his voice should grow into it. -COAmature

Thanks Suey, Penny & Tom:-) His singing & playing was a bit insipid but he seemed like a really nice kid. Maybe that's the problem, you need a bit of mongrel in you to play music.

He certainly looks like a guitar player. I like to leave it to the imagination though. Penny Street

I like the shot with the guitar at least as much & think it's perhaps more on topic. This kid's a natural in front of the camera. How is his playing?

Thanks Carole Mary Anne & Tom:-) No I didn't ask him to pose, he was sitting down busking playing guitar & singing. No one was paying any attention to him, I took a few from the side so he wouldn't be spooked but he turned to look at me wiv a smile. I then went around to the front & got this picy, the picys wiv the guitar didn't seem suit the innocent look of him.

Oh, Rod, this is super. (a square crop would really set this off though. just kidding) Love the clarity of his freckles & eye lashes.
Gotta love that lens! Shoots portraits like a champ.

Very nice portrait, Rod. And I think you're definitely "in the zone." Oh...that was a couple of challenges ago.

Rod, this is an excellent portrait of the young boy - did you ask him to pose for you? CJ
