Can't fool you for a second, Jim B. The black discs are obsidian 'Go' game pieces. Hand held, natural light coming through a window. Here's the shot with less flattering light, and no confusing orientation/perspective issues. http://www.pbase.com/image/10137472 -Joe C

Certainl;y looks like a pen, imbedded in small rocks like we use in a flower vase, with only the pen tip lit with light. Jim B

Perhaps it's a level bubble on a peice of surveyor's equipment or a tool. The background appears to be small black graden stones.
