Concretions

Bellingham

Found in the Anza-Borrego desert in California by my father. He took this one and a small round one and made a sculpture of them. This is a photo of just the main concretion. Unfortunately it has tipped over on a couple of occasions and is, as Pops noted, broken. But I still love it because it is a cool thing and it reminds me of my dad.

Ann...I was the unidentified correct concretion guesser. If I get around to it, I may post a picture of my collection. I have a matched set of about 30 spheres that start at ~2mm and end at ~10 cm diameter. Also have a bunch of oddballs...one that looks like a monkey face.--JC

You got it! These are concretions imbedded in sandstone. To learn more about concretions, check out this website.

we call similar naturally round rocks found in the great lakes region "concretions"...

But you said "Fossil, No!" so I guess "stromatolites" is way off.

"desert" "rock" I just did a google image search on those two words and looked at, at least, 1000 images. The closest I came to a match was "Stromatolites" which is "the fossilized remains of a colony or mat of cyanobacteria that normally exhibits either a domed or a column-like shape, and the sediment in which it lies is marked with fine concentric bands." (fromhttp://www.fossilmall.com/UncleDarwin/stromatolite/About_Stromatolite.htm) Just a shot in the dark!

Nope... getting cooler. There is no seashell matter in this that at all... all rock. The round bits have a name. Think desert. Ann

How about shells imbedded in coral?
ctfchallenge04-Jan-2003 04:10
Getting warmer... imbedded, yes. Fossil, no.

Say what? lol... This is a natural occuring thing.

To me, this looks like a left handed four by side with matching hemmingways. This one is, of course, broken! Pops
