Nice! Rod, Although I agree with your own critique :-) Mid zones missing....
You don't need suggestions, but for others to understand what I mean, I think a curve adjustment layer with RGB channel selected and two points on the curves placed at input 78 and 170 and made to have output 127 and 190 will do it for the subject, background can be burnt a lil bit after that.

Thanks Brent:-) I think this one has contrast instead of tonal range but the challenge is young yet a:-)
