this definitely looks better - not such a penciled feel to it - and lots to look at with the different tones. Nice work!

Gerald, great job in making the changes. The image was much too gray and flat before...now it has real drama and dimensionality. Good work.

Gerald, it does look really nice, now. Few changes has made a lot of difference!

Just posted an updated version: Finally I have managed to move some pixels into zones 1 and 9. In the past, I did avoid the dodge and burn tools; this challenge taught me that they can be very powerful. Cat, this challenge topic is very instructive. -Gerald

Hey Gerald, Nicely done. This is a fine!! Pure white and pure black is hard to get and you are "in the zone" as long as we have a good distribution. Somehow in digital age we have been programmed to avoid pure white and pure black due to BH etc. BHs are not that bad if thay are controlled properly, I think. One should not allow BHs due to carelessnes or negligence, that is the norm. And we can avoid that by setting our black and white points to 4,4,4 and 252,252,252 and then we will be fine for ever :-) And if I understand correctly, what Rod is saying I think is there is still room here to push the zones on both sides.

Thanks, Rod, Doug, Sue Anne and Lydia. As you can see, I am also all but an expert in the zone system, and I was not aware that there should be preferably roughly the same number of pixels in any zone, including zones 1 and 9, until I read your comments and Cat's explanation in the forum. Usually, I try to avoid too many pixels in those border zones in order to prevent blown highlights and drowned shadows. I wonder whether this image is really suited for the Ansel look; I have experimented but don't like the result. Hopefully, this challenge will help me to learn.
Lydia, if I manage to sell this pic I'll split the proceeds with you :-)
Regards
Gerald

I'm certainly not an expert on the Ansel zones, Gerald, but if you're not selling this photo, you're not as smart as I think you are. Wow. I'm astonished. ~Lydia

The content of this picture is great Gerald and I like the B/W treatment. At least some addition Zone I would help for this challenge. -COAmature

I hope you used the zone histogram Gerald:-) This may be missing some darker & lighter tones for the Ansel look but wot a great looking village.
