Well, I guess not too many people live in a subtropical climate :-) This is the fruit of some kind of palm that grows here in Okinawa. I used to think that it turned into palm fronds, but maybe not, judging by its final stages. It starts out like this , and then turns into what is shown in the two pictures following that one (I can't seem to link all of them in one comment).

Well, you're on the right track, but rather than a pine tree it's something you'd find in a tropical/subtropical climate...
