His name was CLARENCE VICTOR DWIGGINS. This is documented. He had Phoebe who had no kids. He also had two children named Don and Toni. There is a phot of Clare if you search his books. He is my grandmother Lucy Baldwin’s second cousin.

In answer to the question about William Addison Dwiggins being "Dwig"'s brother: They were first cousins. WAD's father Moses was the younger brother of CVD's father Charles Dwiggins. WAD (1880-1956) was born in Martinsville, a hamlet not far from Wilmington, but spent most of his grade-school years in Richmond, Indiana, and his junior high and high school years in Zanesville and Cambridge, in southeastern Ohio. In 1904 he moved to Hingham, Massachusetts where he lived for the rest of his life. The cousins knew each other and *very* occasionally exchanged letters but appear to have been casual at best in their connection. Interesting that both became accomplished artists. In the case of WAD, this included book design (over 300 books for Knopf alone), typeface design (about a dozen designs for Mergenthaler Linotype), marionettes, stage/set and lighting design, playwright, calligrapher, expert kite-maker, furniture designer, and on and on. I had and my grand children have now the book Nipper and Pelle in slovenian language.
I got it from my school- teacher back in 1959.
More informations in short time when I get the book back from my granddaughter Zala- 5 years young.
We live in Ljubjana, Slovenia.

I'm fascinated by the adventures surrounding the "Dwigwam" at Canada Lake in the early 1900s, and the "Artists and Writers Colony" described (partly by Phoebe Dwiggins Ballard) in Barbara McMartin's wonderful Town of Caroga book. We had a camp On West Caroga from the '60s through the '80s.
Does the old "Dwigwam" cottage still exist? Are there any recent photos of it, or of its replacement? I'm also curious as to whether Paul and Grace Bransom's cottage on the other side of the lake still exists as it was described. There are a great number of wonderful photos of them and the house from the teens through the mid-1900s available at the Smithsonian's archives. Just Google "The Paul Bransom Papers" and check the various indexes.
Hope this route is still active, and that you can still respond after all these years!

Were Clare Victor Dwiggins and William Addison Dwiggins brothers? They were both born in Ohio, just a few years apart. And they have ears that look alike. And they were both artists. And I am so curious!

Does anyone know anything more about the following book, written and illustrated by Dwig ?

One of Dwig's books seems (?) to be unknown for the American public. He wrote and illustrated it for young people. It deals about two boys who repaired an old houseboat. One night when sleeping in the boat it broke loose and moved out into the open sea. The boys experienced a lot of terrific adventures in Africa and returned home in due course. In one picture in the book we can see that the boys' names in English are "Nipper & Pelle".

The book (152 pages, 159 illustrations) about Nipper and Pelle seems to be non-existent in the English language. It is not listed by American sellers of used books, nor by the US Library of Congress.

Dwig's unknown (?) English manuscript was translated into the two Scandinavian languages Danish and Swedish and the book was published 1943 in Denmark ("Nipper og Pelle") and 1945 in Sweden ("Bosse och Pelle").

I have an old book 1904 by the name of TOASTS,compiled by W.M. Rhoads and drawings by Clare Victor Dwiggins. Does anyone have any information about the book?

So, Dwig's great-grandaughter... was your grandmother Phoebe? married to Todd Hunter Ballard.. I thought she was his only child; perhaps not. I also have photos of Dwig with my father, Mel Graff; in fact with our whole family, including me. Patsy
