This photo series follows my observation of a pair of Eagles that had killed a seagull. I witnessed the kill from my deck, about 1/4 mile away up the hill from the beach. They made quite a racket which first attracted my attention. I grabbed my camera and ran down to the beach to document their feast.
Several months before this incident a couple friends and I planted two tall driftwood poles on the beach in hopes of attracting Eagles to use them. Our efforts paid off as they have used them all summer. During this photo session, as I approached them on the tide flats, they flew off to one of the perches. Then as I got to close to a perch, they would fly down the beach to the other perch, giving me a good workout back and forth along the beach to take the pictures.
In the middle of the "pursuit," the Eagle eating the seagull flew out to the tide flats to continue his meal undisturbed.
I photographed its mate, who continued to perch hop while watching the feathers fly out on the tide flats..
I treked out there for a shot, then he flew back to one of the perches. Eventually he got fed up with my intrusion and carried his half eaten prey off to the hillside trees where this pair nest to eat in privacy.
In the end, an Eagle wannabe took over one of the perches. I had to laugh at his pose, looking out to sea.
