A handsome Mourning Cloak butterfly stopped by late this afternoon. They are one of the first butterflies to appear in spring, having OVERWINTERED in bark and rock crevasses or holes in trees. Amazing little critters.

It is remarkable indeed that the adult overwinters, but I guess that gives them the opportunity to re-emerge early in the spring. I assume most of your butterflies overwinter as dormant eggs or chrysales? By the way, it is a handsome species.

Beautiful closeup shot of this handsome butterfly. Amazing they can survive the winters, isn't it, even tucked into sheltered sites. V
