Graupel! Graupel is not sleet or hail, though sometimes called soft hail. It is actually a snow pellet that is formed when supercooled water droplets in the air are collected and freeze on falling snowflakes, forming 2-5mm balls of crisp, opaque rime. (Wikipedia) Rime is a white incrustation of ice formed when supercooled water droplets freeze almost instantly on contact with a surface. (American Heritage Dictionary)
