Watch Your Step!

While walking the edge of the park today looking for Bobolinks, I stopped and looked down. This little one didn’t make a peep. I reached over with my phone and took this shot and then quickly let it be.

It might have been lucky for you that the mom was not around. Last week our neighbor was walking his Labradoodle and it was attacked by a doe that probably had fawns nearby. The doe's hoof missed Sammy's spine but she got a bad six inch gash in her side. The vet bill was $1,400, but at least Sammy is on the mend.

Our neighborhood is crawling with deer. Most of them are not a problem, but some of the does with fawns get aggressive in the spring, and some bucks can be pushy in the fall.

Very sweet find and capture. Mama was not far away. This happened to my wife while she was on her horse one year - she stopped to look at a doe a short way off, then noticed a fawn curled up in the ferns right below her.

What a great shot, but I imagine it was relieved when you left.

Wow! What a find. They are so darned vulnerable at this stage and have learned from the get-go to stay silent and still. I believe the newborns are without a scent, so predators relying on smell would not find them. VV
