Big Brown Bat
This past summer was a banner year for the bats that spend the days behind the flag on our garage. If you recall we had over thirty at one point, due to the birth of
many young. Although most have left now for warmer climes, we still had two here. I’ve been worried about them knowing that the cold weather was setting in and I didn’t
want them to try to hibernate there, as it would not be warm enough. So I called a local wildlife rehabilitator who specializes in bat care. She came out this morning
and got them—both females. They were both very sleepy and sluggish, already fattened up for hibernation. They will spend the winter in her care living in a refrigerator
designed to mimic their ideal hibernation environment. In the spring she will return them here, unless they are pregnant and have the young in her care.
