American Toad Portrait

This is one of two that I found in one of our window wells this afternoon. This particular well was kind of caving in, so I thought I would dig it out and straighten it.
Under the leaves, I found two of these big guys, basically trapped there. In the other well, I have a piece of fencing which toads and frogs can use to climb out if they happen
to fall in, but I had never seen one trapped in this other well, so there was no escape. Both of these toads looked very healthy, and were hiding under leaves. I wonder if they had
overwintered there? I removed both and placed them in another location, but when I returned with a new "escape fence", I found this guy back "home". I coaxed him to the fence
and he climbed right out, so hopefully now they won't get stuck there any longer.
