11/02/2012 - _MG_8662.jpg

I was excited by recent reports of Evening Grosbeaks in Western New York. It's a big area,
but I had hopes. We have never seen them on our property and haven't seen them for at least
25 years.

Today I took the day off and just as my wife and I were discussing these birds, a flock of 12
showed up! They only stayed for about 30 minutes off and on, but I hope they'll come back.
I got this shot through a window, so it's not great, but I'm happy anyway!

Excellent shot, especially through the window. I think evening grosbeaks will be the story of the winter, as they are showing up all over southern Ontario too. Here, they are regularly seen in Larose Forest, where they breed, but they have not shown up in the city for years and years, but the other day I saw a flock of 10 at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden in the heart of the city. I am hoping they return!! V
