10/17/2010 - _MG_1036.jpg

I found this Eastern Milk Snake 'lost' in the grass when I went out to throw the frisbee with Meadow.

It was cool and cloudy. I warmed him up in my hands for a bit and then put him under some mulch.
He crawled out when it was sunny and I moved him to some warm rocks where he quickly took cover.

There are only a few varieties of venomous snakes in this area. They are all uncommon. The Timber and Massasauga Rattlesnakes are the closest to where I live, but I have never seen one in all my days of birding, hiking, biking, and bushwhacking. The other is the Copperhead, which is found in southeast New York State. Of course there could always be escapees ...

Your narrative is so unassuming: "I warmed him up in my hands..." Grief! he must be non-venomous then?? I think I would have run a mile first before contemplating picking him up....great shot and super focus on this guy's eyes

Not my favorite animal but you sure got a great shot of him. Excellent focus where it should be. Nice of you to warm him up. V

That's a great shot! He's kind of cute. Thanks for taking care of him like you did. Not everyone would do that.

Great shot - love the detail in his eye but glad we don't have snakes here. I take it he's harmless. V
