I think this is better Mikey, thank you for going to so much trouble. I can see detail back in the areas around the tracks etc. and the sky/background looks good. Also the background trees are clearer and more balanced....Great!

I suspect that winch thingy might be for a heavy duty towline used for towing a heavy 'ball' to clear bush and shrub land? Usually two dozers work together with the towline between them? ... But I could be way off the mark... in which case I don't know?

Thanks again ~ Regards Bob

Bob - OK, I hope this looks better to ya. I lightened it somewhat, but the tracks are rusted and should be "dark", no? I figured it was a winch, but what for? It looks to have quite the capacity, as well. There should be a seat right behind it (towards the cam), so that makes it more of a mystery (to me); winching what in what direction. Oh, well. Anyway, that's as good as it gets, seems to me. Also, matched the sky to the page background for a "neat" effect ":^) Cheers, -mikey

Feel free to send me some 'hate mail' Mikey but I reckon this is too far the other way?

I grabbed them both and compared the two images in PS. The first in my opinion is actually better than this one but would be great if it had the detail of the winch area from this one and 'some' of the detail of the pasture (which I thought was sky in the first image?) but only enough to see some detail.

The trees in this one have lost their detail and the tracks of the dozer etc are too dark.

The only way I tackle tricky high contrast images like this is to use layers and a shadow mask and very selectively erase to the desired contrast/level in the specific areas,.

But this is a time factor thing and I wouldn't expect you to play with this for ever and a day?

Thanks for the helpful comments, guys. Hope that's better. I find that posting to these Challenges is analogous to printing, in that what you see is not necessarily what you get. My view of the previous PPed pic wasn't too bad in PS, but when I looked at it with MS RAW Viewer I could definitely see what you're seeing (blown highlights). So, I made some adjustments. Hopefully, not too much, ha! Thanks again for taking the time to comment and let me know what you're seeing. Cheers, -mikey

Good, interesting composition but I have to agree with tv that the highlights seem to be blown out somewhat with the resulting loss of detail.

I have noticed that the image looks a little less extreme when opened in PS. PBase seems to me to brighten images a little more and I usually compensate for this before uploading.

Not sure how you convert to B & W but..I wonder if you can get the original colour version and use image adjustment/Channel Mixer to select monochrome and then play with the rgb channels especially dropping the blue channel down (even significantly into the -ve region) and playing with the red and green channels to bring those highlights down and gather some detail in the sky and the rear of that dozer?

Jeez Mikey this looks like a great shot but the details are lost in the glare on my monitor. Does mine need a calibration or yours? -tv
