I think this is layered.

Hi Troy, I am OK with it being layered, too. Trees/sky as backdrop, some water/grass/ducks in the middle and then the sole bird as foreground element.

Let's suppose you had some wonderfully trained alligator or something (I am seriously kidding OK!) which you could have had just poking his head up above the water line in the bottom left corner of your picture, quite close to the camera: that would have added a serious additional layer, added some balance to the left side of the pic and of course lots of drama to the scene.

However, seeing that such wondefully trained alligators are probably in short supply where you live (same problem where I live, by the way!), some other object (boat, fly-fisherman, rock, etc.) could have served the same pupose.

Hope my VERY tongue-in-cheek remarks are taken in the same light vein as intended! :-)
