Thanks dt and Kelly. It's clean because it's an off-road bike that's never seen dirt. It sits in My Beloved's home office on a special thingy that turns it into a stationery bike. Its red frame is on both sides of the gear set. I dunno anything about why the little gear thingies are different sizes. *grin* I do exercise on my way from my computer to the refrigerator and back -- several times a day, but don't get on the bike. *wink* ~Lydia

I had no idea what a derailleur gear set was but now I know! Anyway, I like the image. I'm going outside to the garage to see if our bikes look this nice. ;^) dtallakson

Lydia, this is lovely and so very clean! My bike's gears won't be shining without a lot of elbow grease. What is the red object in the background? And is there another red object behind the camera or are those red highlights on the gears the reflections off the backsides of the closer teeth? - Kelly

I guess if the pitch of the chain is not identical to that of the gears then there is going to be uneven wear.........

Don't get ME started! -mcbit

Interesting shot Lydia... I am pondering over the 'wear pattern' of the teeth on that cluster. Notice how some teeth are narrower than others?

There are several theories I cam imagine... for instance one applies pressure on the cranks (pedals) on the downward stroke (obviously) and so various teeth take the full load whilst others just 'coast' along... a bit like people really... lol

Another theory could be the cunning designers have hit upon a clever way of improving the gear change by making some teeth narrower and hence more easily engaged into the chain links?

I had better stop right now... I have already overloaded my poor feeble brain way too much!

See what you have done Lydia???? .... extracted all of that nonsense from me by simply posting an interesting photograph, and a nice colourful, vibrant one.. at that!
