For me this is a high contrast image and an HDR image two conditions which I dont find mutually exclusive. Take look a thishttp://www.pbase.com/image/87977427 which also for me is high contrast, it only contains 26 shades of gray from black to white in equal proportions so the tone curve will be flat. The argument lies in the definition of contrast, which I have always taken to be

"4. The use of opposing elements, such as colors, forms, or lines, in proximity to produce an intensified effect in a work of art." Taken from the free online dictionary.

If there is sharp delineation rather than fade between tones even at moderate tonal differences then there is contrast. What does anyone else think?

Now this is an interesting image Alastair. It has a truck load of pixels across the complete range but peaks at each end. It is a cross between a high contrast image and a high dynamic range image?

Because there are so many pixels in the grey scale region they tend to dampen the impact of the extremes.

I am interested in hearing the opinion of others on this? ~ Regards Melbob
