Field of Lost Dreams

Boulder, CO

Every Fall the students at the University of Colorado honor those Americans and Iraqis lost to the current conflict in Iraq by planting flags on many of the quads. The red flags are for US soldiers lost, and the white flags are for Iraqis lost. When they started several years ago, each flag represented one person. Now each red flag represents two US soldiers, and each white flag represents five Iraqis. This is one of the many fields on campus blanketed with flags.

Alistair, thanks for recording this image for us to think about. Not only is the image great, but the idea of honouring both sides for their loss is wonderful. Julie

Alastair - thank you for posting this and thanks to the students for all of the work in laying the flags out. It would be awesome to see the entire collection you've described. - Kelly

Very moving and beautiful image Alastair. So many contrasts both real and implied!

We humans are such sad creatures at times.... oil and 'pride'... are they two of the most important things in our world? :-(

Actually, I have found something that works of mine...The Seductive Dream of Empire...Nothing new under the Sun...but since I've asked you, and you've given permission, I suppose on Sunday, I'll put this up for a two day run.

I find this image to be...visually exciting...and maybe important in its visual impact, yet pretty as all get out also. The tension between these competing elements is ....very compelling to me.

Thanks, Traveller

Hi Traveller,
Of course you can use it. I'm flattered.
All the best

Mr. Norcross, I am running, against my better judgment, a fairly large political bog at the moment...Every Friday, and then changed throughout the week, I post an image of mine to start an open thread.

I find this to be an extraordinarily interesting and provocative image...I would like to use this for a day or two with your explanation but it would be a very public site. I would of course give credit to you...if you wished, or not.

Personally, I am so angry at various political developments at the moment that I am pulling back out of this a bit, but I still have my duties. As noted, I'd like to use this for a few days with you permission...sized at about 350x270 so it would be small.

Let me know,

Thanks, Traveller
