Thanks again - Cat, Michael, Najinsky. I definitely will try this a few more times. I have a location I really want to give a go but it involves a hike so that is more complex with having to take in a car battery and sleeping bag etc. But it is at 8200 feet in elevation so the view of the mountain in the foreground will hopefully be larger and above treeline - might make for a more dramatic foreground. I'll definitely want to do that one before winter. lol Thanks, Cindy

Thanks again everybody! - Markjay - yeah, the watermark is hideous - it took me a long time to start doing these but I had so much work ripped off I had to. I usually make them much smaller in challenges but just have been so dang busy I didn't even take the time.

Alan - this was done with continuous 30s exposures - 900+ all night. There is some tech info in the challenge thread fyi.

well - off to a funeral (no worries - I'm not a real mourner - I just play one on TV - have gone from still photographer to extra tonight. lol)

I have always wanted to capture this same type of shot with my 350D but havent figured out how to leave the shutter open that long. I think it can do 30 seconds... Time to drag out the book and look up how to do this. Excellent shot! I love the centering on the one star. Nicely done!

Really cool. Great work, Cindy! And where is Rod? He's usually beating up on me over my tiny author sig on my images :-) Personally, I have zero prob with artist sigs, they don't distract me at all. Thank you for sharing this with us, Sharon! Markjay

Impressive work. (I see three distinct meteor trails, two bright and a long, paler one, going down behind the mountain.)

LOL! Too Funny Melbob!!! I didn't even know you had possums down undah. Well, other than the air mattress going flat we were serenaded by a strange animal/bird/amphibian??? that sounded like a cross between a bullfrog and a dog barking. lol But in general everything was quite uneventful :). Come on up anytime and I'll point out the North Star for you :). Getting a star circle does sound much more challenging in the Southern Hemisphere, still I would sure like to try sometime.

Thanks again, Cindy

Great result Cindy. I can appreciate your efforts and it produced the 'goods'! Great Pic!!!

Last time I tried something like this down here it was disastrous.

We don't have a 'south' star so we have to find the south celestial pole by lining up the perpendicular bisector of alpha and beta centauri with the longitudinal extension of alpha and beta crux to estimate the pole. .... OK... I did that, set up the tripod and set the camera and a kangaroo knocked over my tripod and a wombat ate my remote control cord!

Whilst I attended to that problem a possum was busy feasting on my breakfast cereal!

I tripped over a rabbit burrugh and broke my mobile phone!

Sleeping on the cold ground was the least of my problems!

I think I'll have to emigrate?

Any space up there?

~Regards Melbob

Thanks guys. These are a lot of work. But then again, spending the night under the stars is something all of us should do from time-to-time :). Sam, the pickup wasn't so uncomfortable . . .but the air mattress going flat was! lol Cindy

What wonderful star trails you've captured, Cindy...and it looks like a couple of meteors thrown in for good measure.
