Cheers, Vikas.

Fabulous shot Jim, very skillful and highly effective (as usual). I've been looking out for this lens but it's out of stock on the Island at the moment. I'm reading (and seeing) a lot of good things about it. Regards, -Najinsky

Jim the image speaks for itself, the powerful line, composition and color...

I also appreciate your "technical notes' that allow us a peak behind the scenes at your winning formula. thanks for sharing, bruja

Except that you've got to throw in the 1.6x factor too, so the rule of thumb would indicate that you should use a shutter speed of at least 1/27th of a second (assuming that you've set your "acceptable smear length" to be a fixed percentage of the frame width).

Still, it's always easier to hand hold wide angle shots than telephoto shots. But I've gotten excellent hand held shots with this lens at 1/2 second. The IS just extends what you'd normally be able to do at any given focal length and the newer IS works well even for quite long shutter speeds.

I've always wondered if the IS control algorithm takes the focal length and the selected shutter speed into account to adjust some of the parameters for the feedback loops. This would be good because you're always balancing the ability to track a moving object against stifling unwanted shake. At some point, you've got to give up and allow the image to slew. So there would always be a lower frequency limit. And it'd be nice to think that they reduce that lower limit as you go to wider angle settings or select longer shutter speeds.

Based on how well it all seems to work at wide angles, I think they may well do that on these lenses. But I don't actually have any inside dope on how their IS algorithms work.

Plus, what do they say, 1/focal length handheld. And 1/13s is pretty close to 1/17. -- Victor

Thanks everyone. The IS helps a lot. I am always highly amused when I read on the forums about how IS is useless on wide angle lenses ;) Jim H.
