Michael - I used two fantastic newfangled light sources. I'm so glad you asked, b/c I'm simply bursting at the seams! I can't contain my enthusiasm over them! One of them, the main light, is very difficult to control, though. It gets way too overbearing, and often prevents good images from being taken for the greater part of the day. It's also extremely cumbersome, making it very difficult to move it where you need it. Worst of all, it gets unbearably hot. The fill light, OTOH, is sooo simple to use, and offers a great deal of control and directional flexibility. That's the 580ex flash. The other is, oh, crud, what do you call it again?... oh, yeah, the sun!!!!! LOL! ;) ~ Lonnit

Terrific, Lonnit. The color saturation on the background is wonderful. Were you using a reflector for the portrait? If not, how did you light her face? -Michael

Thank you, Tom. Yes, it is a brave composition, breaking that midline placement rule. I was well justified in doing so, though as the composition's leading lines give permission - they eye goes to her face, jumps up to the bright yellow car at the top, then travels downwards along the other cars, returning us back to her face. I always say that I follow the rule of thirds, unless leading lines dictate otherwise. This was one of those moments and so, I appreciate your acknowledgement! Thanks again. :) ~ Lonnit

Thanks, Jim. Yes, pardon the pun, but everything in the image, as you mentioned, just clicked. I'm thrilled that what I saw is coming across to at least one other person. :) ~ Lonnit

I agree. This is one of those shots that grabbed my attention with the thumbnail. I tend to like photos that are very graphic and have a strong pattern to them so that even the thumbnail or a fast glance grabs me but then stand up well when I view them full size and look carefully too. And this shot fits that. The pattern and colors of the Ferris Wheel against the sky and surrounding the lightness of the face are great but the way that's all out of focus then lets my eye get pulled right to her face and eyes. Wonderful composition, colors, exposure, and use of DOF. The positioning of everything in the frame is great. Jim H.
