Coney Island Palm

Coney Island, New York

The unusual thing here is the color, and the palm
tree, unexpected, in the middle of Coney Island!

Thanks, Nico, and I'm always happy to coin a phrase! LOL! ~ Lonnit

:-) Wonderful, Lonnit! I really need to bear that phrase in mind if one day somebody has something to say about horizons in one of my own shots: "Perhaps the Earth was atilt that day!" Or perhaps it is all due to global warming, who knows. Coming to think of it, that would also explain why the beach looks like a vast desert here! :-) :-) Compliments and regards jnconradie

Thanks, guys! Yes, it gets whacky looking if the horizon is straight. Perhaps the Earth was atilt that day! LOL! ~ Lonnit

Cute image Lonnit and I agree, it looks like an illustration in a children's book! The horizon looks a little odd to me but if you straightened it the post with the red thingy on top would look even stranger. Love the colors! CJ

This is really fun, Lonnit! The coloring looks like "old postcard" to me and works perfectly with this image. ~Sharon

Thank you, gentlemen. Yes, I broke my own rule here about having to shatter a rule if it's going to work, otherwise it looks like an error. However, in this image, I guess because of the angled tracks in the sand offsetting it, the slightly tilted horizon works, and works very well, supporting the strangeness of the fake tree, the red thing, and the overall oddly colored scene itself. Looking at the image initially, I sensed that the tilt was correct. However, I double-checked myself by straightening the horizon to see how it looked, and it was terrible! Same thing goes for the image here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/20351097@N00/ ) of the people on the bench. Straightening the horizon looks stupid. My assumption is that in this image, the tracks counterbalance the horizon.

I've no clue what the red thing is. I think there is a possibility that the tree is a sprinkler for the kids. Maybe the red thing is some sort of control for it.

As for the color - I've never done beach scenes this way, but I played with the image and when I got this look it just screamed at me to go no further. Personally, I love it. It has such a happy, fun feel. Reminds me of an illustration one might find in a children's book.

Thanks for commenting! ~ Lonnit

OK, so you are going to be unusual by getting compositionally subtle on us, LOL. The rule of thirds in full force here, but that slight tilt is dynamite. The lines and angles work very nicely with the slight curve of the palm. The color rendering is bright and fun. -Michael

I see what you meant about the angled horizon, but for some reason, against the angles of the tracks on the beach it seems to work. The colors are interesting. Sort of a study in pastels. This might be the beach near the houses from "Edward Scissorhands". That palm tree cracks me up. And what is the red thing next to it? It looks like a ball washer from a golf course - but that'd be just too strange :) Jim H.
