Thanks everyone. For those who are not familiar with this story, it is “Dune,” by Frank Herbert. And by the way, I did not leave out an “i,” in the word "Fremen." That is the what the wandering tribes of the deep desert (considered by the empire to be rebels) call themselves. I have always thought the author intended the word to bring to mind the concept of “free men.”

You guys are way too funny. I would most certainly have guesed it was some type of wormy creature from planet earth. I would obviously have been highly mistaken!! :-) Shame about the firemen. Are the Shai-Huluds really so bright red in their natural state, or was this one taking up a defensive posture to ward off enemies and/or photographers? Wonderful stuff. Have you ever noticed that during the film credits for "Independence Day" there is the disclaimer, "No aliens were harmed in the making of this movie."? Your disclaimer gave me much the same chuckle. This is quite a remarkable image. -Michael

Our 'sand worms' have cillia along their side and are flat rather than round BUT.... as you explained ... these are from 'the planet Arrakis' and I cannot remember stopping off there during my many inter-planitary missions? Sad about those firemen though! ~ Regards Melbob

I found the “models” in a carton (13 for the price of 12!) in a special fridge located in a store’s sporting goods section. They were subsequently released in my wife’s herb garden.

Very funny, Mr. Beck...is this a sand worm? Are there such things as sand worms? Or is this something washed up from the sea in all of its bright and multi-colored glory? Nevertheless, an interesting shot. Best Wishes, Traveller
