Blanket Art

Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, South Africa

I went to jail to get this one!

This piece of furniture, built from prison blankets, is part of the "Resistance and Resilience" display at the Old Fort Prison Complex, commonly known as "Number Four".

This prison complex (now a museum) "where thousands of black men were imprisoned... it is also the place where many learned to survive and defy their jailors.

Many of the prisoners were guilty of non-political crimes, but many fell foul of race laws or were guilty of resisting these laws, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Robert Subukwe."

This is incredible Nico. The story adds another dimension to this image and makes one take a closer look and just imagine what must these four walls have witnessed? Thanks for sharing this. What a clever way to utilise those blankets?

I trust you ever-so-helpful family bailed you out or did they resort to the standard... 'file in cake' routine? ~ Regards Melbob

I can honestly say that I have never seen a couch like this in my life! At first, I did not like the upper level of the wall showing but, now that I look at it more and more I really love the geometry of the converging wall lines a great deal. Thanks for sharing this with us. Markjay
