This has nothing to do with metal or a microscope. The thing is black polystyrene on which refraction created the raninbows. MCsaba

Kiki, what you refering to dark field photography for polished metal surface structures. But you have answered your own question by the scale argument.

Is this shot through a microscope? It's almost like reflections on broken glass rods, there's a capillary feel to it... Looks like a mineral. Perhaps a derivation of coal? Metals get a nice colorchange when heated locally, but not as intense as this.. I think.. the scale feels wrong for the color to be that effect.
