Handy Gadget

"No Fixed Address" They lived in tents!- Goldfields

OK!... a clue or two:...
1. It has been "Hand" forged!
2. It was used in the 19th and early 20th centuries by certain people!
3. both male and female would use it!
4. Kids can use it too...
5. ... and it doesn't hurt! (Unless you use it in a manner NOT intended!)
More Clues:
6. It is standing on its stand and is used in this position.
7. "no fixed address" is also a clue!
8. It is heavy... but it "can be a lighter thing"! *** this is a special 'cryptic' clue for Victor :-)

More clues....

9. Used in the 'Gold Rush Days"
10. Very close to ACTUAL size!

Hah.. I should have taken a closer look. I browse "alien" exif data with a web-browser addon, which doesn't include that tag. EXIF data can easily be changed btw. -kiki2

Well I only just looked, but the EXIF data identifies this challenger. Good on you Melbob to have your name embedded in the EXIF data.

Belated congratulations! I ignored the camera in "Unbearable" and "Yes, Master".. can you forgive..
5D... that would be mighty good fun with a wide-angle lens. I haven't outgrown the 20D yet so untill that time.. I'll just dream on lol. One day...
Canon DSLR Challenge29-Mar-2007 07:28
Yep... I just mortgaged the house and paid Ms Canon $5050 and got to take one home when they first came out... spent the weekend cleaning it so I could actually use it.... of course you can buy them from the local 'fish and chip' shop now for around $3500... but who's bitchin? (... ummm ... me!...) ...

Congratulations on the correct answer... not an easy one because these things have no particular shape and were made by the resident Blacksmith.
Those indents mean nothing at all...! unless they also used these as a 'stand-by' weapon against 'claim jumpers'? ~Regards Melbob

I did wonder about the "YEY" and "where".. There were gold rushes in Australia!
The only one I know I thought had a name other than what it seemed here is you. I thought of you as "Mel" - untill I discovered your pbase account. Is it a person whose camera isn't what it seems either? When did you get a 5D?

(And I know it's spelled WAX.. VAX is computer stuff)
Bob AYTON29-Mar-2007 03:34
K2... it could be a person whose name is not what it seems ;-)
jbhgmvo28-Mar-2007 22:59
And I think you're right.. not Lonnit.. but who with a 5D calls me K2.. my brain is so full of pixels after UFO spotting the past 48 hours I'm all giddy..
jbhgmvo28-Mar-2007 22:55
They probably boiled soup on the vax generations ago... or it's been removed by vax-eating germs..
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 22:50
I don't think this is Lonnit. Also this was never been used, no wax residue anywhere ... -Cat
jbhgmvo28-Mar-2007 16:52
(frenetically looking for halos... nope.. not a single one..) 5D... legend... Lonnit??
An unusual Lonnit shot..
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 15:37
YEY... K2 you legend! That is correct.... one sticks a candle onto the spike..... Well done .... now..... who...? and Where?...
jbhgmvo28-Mar-2007 15:18
A candle holder? They come in all odd shapes and materials.. prolly back then as well..

OK, last guess today: "Actual size" clue tells me that those are indents for fingers, not legs. Is it a digger, or shovel of some sort ("gold rush days")? - PeterK
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 13:40
... nope :(
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 13:38
A sled!! - PeterK
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 13:36
OOOWH!... Ouch! ... nope... not a seat nor a back scratcher! :(
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 13:20
A toilet seat, with one handle showing in the foreground?
Back scratcher is my second guess. - PeterK
Canon DSLR Challenge28-Mar-2007 01:43
Maybe it's familiar to me because it's similar to the latch to the gate to my backyard. Oh, I just realized there are clues! Pooh. They didn't help. Anyway, back to the latch to my backyard, it's essentially a strip of metal, one end of which catches on a catch. But I don't think that's what we have here. I do feel, somehow that the springiness of the flat piece of metal is important and that its position around the sharp prong is a temporary thing in normal use.

Now I can barely make out something in the darkness at the bottom that might be a bolt, possibly securing the prong on a wall. In this case, we're seeing something hanging from the prong, nearly upside down to make it interesting I guess. Now for some reason, I'm thinking it could be the handle for a water scoop, but that wouldn't explain the scalloped edges.

My brother thinks it's the innards of a Victorian glove stretcher. -- Victor
Canon DSLR Challenge26-Mar-2007 22:53
This is so weird -- it's like I can almost remember what it is. But I can't. I'm sure I'll be hitting myself when I finally figure it out. I think it's the scalloped edges that are ringing a bell. Some sort of latch or clasp or something. Darn. This is like trying to remember someone's name, only visually. -- Victor

Looks like a needle used during last century to draw blood for the blood sugar tests for diabitic patients...:)
A poker for animals, horses, bulls etc?

Pre-historic weapon of self-defence, I think. It must have been handy to 'wack' attacking dinosaurs with? :-) Only kidding. Very interesting - no clue at all. jnconradie
