Hi, guys, it's me! I am sorry I didn't answer sooner, I have been busy over at the other challenge. So, Pops, how does one get one's name embedded in the EXIF data? When I expand the EXIF data here I don't see an entry for author, how are you getting that?
Anyway, I am happy you all enjoyed this image, even if you did guess what it was pretty quickly! ~Sharon

The EXIF data does not tell me who the "author" is so there is no clue there. It does say "Unknown" which is not much help.

BTW - it is handy to have your name embedded in the EXIF data. It helps protect your copyright interests in the photos you take.

Oaky, we all deserve a pat on the back, especially Victor...but I still want to know who did this. Best Wishes, Traveller

Excellent, Victor! You are very observant!

Here are a couple of things that clued me in. There was obviously motion blur. However, the motion blur was inconsistent around the picture. But, although inconsistent, individual lights tended to be fairly consistent with their close neighbors. So the motion was of the subject, not the camera. And the subject had to be something that allowed movement, yet tied neighbors together somehow.

The color change is probably obvious in retrospect. But if you study carefully, you can see gradual color shifts in individual trails.

The very small aperture was a clue, too. Obviously a small aperture was needed for such a long exposure -- or was it? At ISO400, there were a couple of stops available to open up, yet the camera was stopped down, probably to the limit. This meant we are probably looking at something very close.

Finally, there is some radial streaking that at first I thought was caused by zooming during exposure -- but then there wasn't enough other stuff in the picture to confirm that. It turns out just to be images of the fibers themselves. Some are in silhouette. Others are reflecting.

Apparently, 8 seconds is long enough for the motion of the fibers to settle. The bright red points are the final resting locations of the fibers.

Oh, you are all too good! I was sure that it would take longer for you to figure this one out! It is, indeed, a fiber optic light, one that changes colors. Here it is:

I concur about the optical fiber thing. They may have changed color over the 8 second exposure. Very cool. -- Victor

Almost no pp in this other than to convert from RAW and darken the "sky" a bit. :-)

This is very cool and a total puzzle to me. I'll patiently wait to find out what it is.
Guest 26-Mar-2007 14:32
Very nicely done: My guess would be an optical fiber based lamp too, similar to Traveller's!

This one is intriguing! My first guess was some flying insects......but at an 8 sec exposure, that can't be it.

Ohhhhhhh...I like this a lot. Uncloak yourself and tell us how you did this (in the next couple of days)...and maybe what it is. I think optical fibrer with a lot of pp...Best Wishes, Traveller
