"In this sense, I am not sure that you can approach this image with a normal photographic analytical framework...it is not Static...things are happening and when you look at it in these terms...I think that the image works well."

This is the best compliment you could give me. Some of my favorite photographers are the ones that tell a story with a single photograph (such as some of Sally Mann's work). .. if a photo of mine provokes thought and discussion, I couldn't be happier.

So Thanks! :)

Thank you for being gracious in your reply...but looking at this again, I might note that unlike a conventional photograph, this one seems to have a distinct past...(something has happened or is happening in side the girl), and it has...a future...something is about to happen...she will turn and leave the frame...or something.

In this sense, I am not sure that you can approach this image with a normal photographic analytical framework...it is not Static...things are happening and when you look at it in these terms...I think that the image works well.

But you should warn us and let us know that we are now outside of our regular frame of reference....lol

It is interesting you called it a theatre piece. My daughter is into drama and acting. Hubby and I are into film making. And I'm a traditional artist as well as photographer... so I'm sure all those influences shine through in this one.

My interest in taking the photograph was inspired by the challenge itself and reading from others stuck in colder climates where the scenary out there isn't exactly colorful. As my daughter has this amazing red coat, I though it would be interesting to play that contrast off the "blah" winter background... And being the challenge is called "Living Colour" I liked the twist of doing it in the graveyard.

She represents the only "living colour" in the photograph.

What it may say to the viewer... that is up to them... which is what I think art is about :)

Well, Ms. Rabitt, I think that you point is well taken. At some level I apologize for it. And yet, that was the mental processes I went through on this picture. I like it but it is decidely odd in thematic content and framing. This is certainly out of the mainstream...but it is your take on...well, the challenge and I suppose other things as well.

It is as much a theater piece as anything....it is like an essay of sorts. It is trying to say all kinds of things. It is interesting for this...story-ness about it.

I really didn't know how to catgorize this in my head...so for shorthand I retreated to:

Is this a voting image or not?

I came down on the no side...and possibly should not have mentioned this as bluntly as I did. But that is what occured in me.

Yet, I do confess that the image has grown on me.

I respect it for what it is...what it set out to accomplish.

Existential Angst.

At least for me...and for you? What is it saying for you?

Best Wishes, Traveller

I assume you mean the "background" in B&W -- because the whole thing in B&W would go against the challenge theme and sort of illiminate the point of the bright red coat - LOL.

I hear what you're saying, but I liked the whole thing in color as part of this challenge... I liked how the natural colors of the scene were so stark compared to her coat... and the fact she is "living" there in the cemetery, was a neat idea for this theme.

Thanks for viewing.

ps... maybe I shouldn't say this, but Traveller, I thought your comment was a bit... um... rude. When I comment on other's photos I certainly won't say "hey, nice photo but I won't be voting for it."

I like it too, although to me, it just screams B&W conversion

So almost Goth...and yet true to its spirit. I like the distinction of the red against the out of focus deadness of winter...the pale skin. I'm not sure anyone else likes this, but I do...not that I'll vote for this...but it is interesting. Thanks for posting. Best Wishes, Traveller
