Thanks Lance for taking time to help out here. Unfortunately I have only PS 7, but have taken a copy of your suggestions to use later if I get PS CS2.

Julie - If you have PS CS2 you could try the image->adjustments->shadow/highlight command. It will default to 50%/0%. If you adjust the sliders to about 30%/20% you'll see a lot of the highlighted areas restored. You can play with the sliders until you're satisfied. Then you can restore some of the lost contrast with levels. You don't really need layers to do this, just do it on a copy if you want to save the original.
It's a lovely image.

I agree with you Marianne, but I don't know how to darken the highlights without losing the darker parts of the image. I guess I need to learn about layers. Julie

I like this one, Julie, but the parts in sunlight seem to be overexposed and detract from the mood. Can you darken them a bit?
