Thanks all.

I've always been struck by the unknown story of the fathers, mothers, wives, sons and daughters left behind. The pain and suffering of these men ended most probably in a battle. We can all imagine that. It is the heart ache of those left behind that gets me. And it doesn't matter if the graves are from a battle 140 years ago or yesterday. That's why I find these graves so sad.

Sad and solemn atmosphere here

Nice shot. A grim repetition but one we need to be reminded of.

If you can ever get to see it, Yann Arthus-Bertrand has a stunning picture of one of the WW1 grave yards taken from the air - just hundreds of white crosses & their shadows on a green grass background. I've looked for an internet link but can't find one and I don't think I had better post a scanned image for copyright reasons - its the 11th November page in the original Earth from the Air 365 Days book. The challenge topic had already reminded me of it and you've made the same link.

Great one Mr. Pops! I like the B&W conversion on this one. Puts one in a somber mood and life in perpective. -Cat

I love the image Pops, fits the theme perfectly. I will the pain in the rear guy though, and inquire whether elongated shadows of morning or late afternoon light may have contributed to this excellent image. Greetings. Sam Attal.

Very moving Pops, I see a story in each and every marker... so much the same yet so individual. How can we do this to our young people?... for what???... for whom???
I like pictuires that tell a story and this certainly does. Great post Pops, B&W great decision! ~ Regards Bob

Excellent, Pops. It evokes a sense of regret and sadness in me. I think the bw also contributes strongly to the mood. Compliments. ~jnconradie
