*Out Of Ideas*

The image turned out totally different than I originally imagined. Turned out to be closer to the grunge style. The background effect is the texture of piece of paper which was backlit.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I had some old lightbulbs left over from some old shots. They where all broken to begin with. Strange there was one which had the filament in tact but still didnt work. Two bulbs used for this photo.

This image reminds me with many “changing the light bulb” jokes. I like it though; and I second Lonnit’s entry that I find very eloquent and poetic. Sam Attal

The feeling I get from the background is "parchment". I somehow tells me "Da Vinci". I like it as is.

Nicely done! Very creative. I, for one, am thrilled you did not put this on the run-of-the-mill-uncreative-boring-hightech-plain ol'-bland-conventional-mundane white background like most photogs would. The background makes the shot; it gives it character. The muddy corners are splendid! It's textured, it's rich, it's got presence. This has much more feeling, taking the emphasis off of the fact that the bulb has been separated, which would then become the sole function of the image, to create an image where the bulb has a place to live, a sense of belonging, a home. It looks like it could have been taken decades ago, which adds to its richness and maturity. ~ Lonnit

works for me

Techo, I'm not at all bothered by the slightly mottled background. Indeed, I think it helps the glass globe to stand out more. Also, the vignetting on the bottom corners is a nice touch. Was it intentional? I really like your take on the subject.

Clever take and quite appropriate for this challenge Techo. Like the concept which is usually a bulb icon so no detail is really required.. i.e. the silhouette of the base works for me.

I always have difficulty at this point whether to go for 3D realism or for a stylized postcard like 2D comp'. Nico's point is a good one about the background but it might force a significant change to the lighting aspect.

I would be interested in how you go with this.... and BTW..Techo ... you only sacrificed one bulb didn't you? ~ Regards BOB

Join the club of people with ever-longer wish lists of photographic stuff to purchase...! :-)

Just before you rush off and change anything, you might just want to wait to hear comment from others first. I am perhaps far too "traditional" in my likes/dislikes of backgrounds and others might just feel the "grunge" look is perfect and less cliche'd.

Thanks, as always, for receiving the comment in the same positive spirit it was intended. Regards ~jnconradie

Thanks so much for your comment :) Especially the part about the background, I had mixed thoughts about it. Thought it would look interesting while I shot it. I can easily dodge out the background to pure white because I didnt take a version with a clean white one.

I tried lighting the bulb from the sides but was never pleased with how the reflections came out. So I tried backlighting it, which is actually underlighting it here, was shooting down at the floor. Need to try and build up a bigger light to get more pleasing reflection of the light source on the bulb and/or buy and try polarizer. It's all on my wishlist ;) the 580ex, softbox, and filters.

I like the concept, but somehow the background does not quite "do it" for me. A more even, bright white, perhaps? Full marks for the creativity and willingness to "sacrifice" a light bulb that appears to have been in working order? :-) Regards ~jnconradie
