Empty Life*

Kansas, USA

A change of pace for me. Trying to come up with something that evokes a sense of emotional emptiness. Monochrome is not my thing, but it seems necessary for the effect I want. Suggestions welcome.

Nicely done. I don't think it could have been done any better. ~kt

Very moody, well-done. I'm not sure what I think about the noise on the person though--seems a bit too speckly to me. I don't mind it on the pavement and shoes for some reason. Heck, I don't know what I'm talking about :). --Melanie

Intense! I think you did well to capture and portray emotion. (Perhaps a little too dark and grainy for me, but I know this is purely subjective.) Lovely stuff. Regards ~jnconradie

I like this - very sad/moody scene which portrays a sense of despair very well. Seems a little too grainy to me but very good none-the-less. CJ

You beat me to it :-) I was gonna drive downtown and look for something like this. But I doubt I can do better. The posture, lightning, and reflection - all work superbly to convey the photo's theme. Well done.

You did well with the separation to avoid the blob. Just emote a bit more and it'll come through. :) A reflector will also help reveal that hidden arm as well - which makes me think... perhaps that is why I'm feeling an akwardness about this; there seems to be an arm missing, which didn't dawn on me the first time around. That's probably why I was instinctively feeling a need to bounce some light in there, which would reveal the second arm (if there is one!) and ease the uneasiness. :) ~ Lonnit

Thanks for the comments Lonnit. It is posed. I wanted to make sure there was some separation of the arms, legs and body. As dark as I envisioned the picture, I didn't want the person to be a solid mass of black. I look forward to playing around with this more tonight. (If it stops raining.)

I don't know exactly why, but this screamed "posed" to me. Somehow, it doesn't look like a natural position. I don't mind the grain in the rest of the shot, but I don't care for it in the jacket/hood. It looks like you might have pulled up the curve there, bringing out the noise. As for the lighting, I like it as is, but just put a reflector close to camera-left to bounce a bit of lighting back onto the subject. Not much, just a bit. The wet street is good. The shoes look nice and gritty. When doing the reshoot, think the despair, don't just pose it. The pose is ok, it's just missing the emotion. ~ Lonnit

I think I will try at least one other version of this, perhaps with the light in front of or above the subject instead of behind. I like the wet pavement and we'll be having more of that for a few days.

I also like the reflected high lights at the bottom of the image as well as the title. But it does make me sad... T

This is very much like Bruce Jones Self Portrait in the last Challenge. I'm not sure which is more effective...this does convey despair...hummm, have you tried the subject being a little brighter or does that not work at all? Traveller

I like the layered shadows of light and the hightened grainy effect. Sam Attal.
