Thank you T and Lonnit, glad I'm not crazy :). Thank you Cat and Nico. Cat, I don't know what that band is, now that you mention it. Maybe a weird artifact of shadows or lens flare of some kind, don't know.... --Melanie

An excellent portrayal of emptiness and desolation... and yet with the clear signals that life is and was not too far away. I also thought it was a pure bw until I spotted the little touch of colour in the dog. Well done. ~jnconradie

Very nice and moody! I think the dog adds than distracts. -Cat
Just curious: is there a horizontal bluish band about 1/2 cm thick at the top of the photo. Whats the source?

No, not crazy. Just as sane as I am! ~ LOnnit

No you're not carzy, Melanie....lol...it is also interesting that the dog is only object in the frame that has color in an essentially mono-chromatic world. Best Wishes, T

Thank you Lonnit! So does that mean maybe it's not just me, and maybe I'm not crazy? :) --Melanie

At first I thought the dog was a distraction, but as quickly as I thought that, I then thought that he adds to the story. My conclusion is that it is correct both with and without the dog. It all depends upon the usage of the photo. If it's a landscape, the dog has no place in it. If it's a story shot, the dog is essential. Either way, it's a very dramatic shot, and I like it. :) ~ Lonnit

Thank you both for your comments. Trav, I originally considered this one an accident and wasn't going to do anything with it (Loki popped his head in the frame just as I pressed the shutter). But when I saw it a second time thru I decided to give it a go. I decided I actually liked his head looking into the frame (even though he's out of focus), as it looks like he's an observer more than a 'participant'. Since he's looking 'into' the frame, I find my eye coming to him and leading right back into the shot. (And since he's so dark, I find the out of focus part doesn't bother me so much.) 'Shy, I think I was trying to keep some detail in the snow; and the bright, slanting afternoon light meant giving more detail to the shadows blew out the snow; and I only wanted some of the snow blown out. I sort of wanted the vanishing point to be somewhat indistinct. (At least I think that's what I wanted :).)

I'll post my other version of this road in a few, but I warn you now, the dog is in that one also :).

I really appreciate the feedback, as I really need the outside perspective.

I think I agree with Traveller on this one. The dog draws my eye away from the empty road in spite of your excellent use of leading lines. It's a very atmospheric photo, perhaps a bit underexposed intentionally?

I particularly like the sparkel in the snow...I don't know about the dog though...does it add or detract from the image? Maybe greater DOF also? Best Wishes, T
