Normally, I'd agree with you - centering the subject, or horizon, can add a nice calmness and sense of peace and tranquility to an image. In this image, though, I had a hard time with it because of the nothingness in the upper half - it's all blown out, due to challenge rules. In this case though, all that white draws the viewer up into the missing sky, away from the subject, and then the top branch graps us and leads us up and out of the frame. The suggested crop prevents the viewer from being booted out of the image. I personally don't think it would negatively impact the mood of the image. Actually, it incresese the percentage of darkness in the image, which adds to the peacefulness. Just my thoughts on the matter. Do not change it if you don't agree. :) ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, I usually don't place the subject in the center of the frame, but in this case I thought it emphasized the figure's solitariness and the sense of his being in the middle of "here" and "there" and heading into something unknown. I think I also wanted to provide some contrast between the size of the trees dwarfing the kid on a bike. At the same time, your suggestion also has merit, although it gives a different feeling to the image. I'll have to think about it. Thank you for the suggestion.

I like it, but feel it's got too much top - and nothing in that top that adds to the image. I'd prefer it cropped just above the horizontal branch. This will also take your subject out of the middle of the image. ~ Lonnit
