Thanks. I figure everyone has already seen these snowflake shots till they're tired of them, but still, it seemed appropriate to the challenge and the time of year. It's funny, but I keep trying to get more snowflake shots all of the time because I know I can do better.
And after staring at so many of them, I find that I tend to enjoy two distinct types of shots: First, are ones that are very simple and have just one distinct flake in them. They make for a much better thumbnail too.
Second are ones that are a lot more complex with a number of flakes but which still have some distinct "traditional snowflake" patterns visible. But those shots make for dull thumbnails. They sort of break with my normal preference for simplicity in a shot. They're only fun to look at when viewed large and even then may be far too busy to really be what I'd think of as excellent photos.
I think what I liked about this one was the red/green in the background and the way the red and green were both caught refracted in the outlines of some of the flakes. I'd like to try this again to try to get more of that effect into the shot somehow.
It might look better with a "less busy" shot using only one or a couple of flakes. I put a few more from this particular "shooting session" here:
