Iridium Flare*

Pittsford, NY

The definition of a blown highlight! This is a 44 second exposure taken as an Iridium Satellite passes through the precise location in space where one of its polished antennae redirects sunlight to my exact position on Earth. This specular reflection is only tens of kilometers wide as it quickly cuts a swath across the earth's surface, so you have to know where and when to look. Fortunately, the website www.heavens-above.com can give anyone this information.

Canon EOS D60 ,Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
44 Seconds, ISO 100, f/2.5. full exif

Markjay, That's not true!!

Take a look at my tutorial:

http://www.macnmotion.com/iridium/

You can set up on a tripod without tracking capability to try this. The ISS passes over all the time, you can get that info on Heavens Above as well! At the very least, use Heavens Above to view a Flare -- better yet, find one that will go off during a Christmas or New Years party, and predict a flare in the sky! I've won several bets doing that, and impressed more than one young lady! Andy
