Victor, you are right the leaf is the front most element here, followed by the mesh and then the light source. BH = blown highlights.
I did not want the texture to define the leaf, instead I let the shodow define it for me. I want to explore this technique for few more shapes, which show the definition only because of the shadow on them.
Jim, yes the leaf is back lit.

I like this too. It's a clever idea for giving the viewer some reference to the shape of the leaves. I guess the leaves are backlit by the light through the screen? Very nice. Jim H.
On second look, this is different from what I thought at first. At first, I thought we were seeing the plant through the mesh. In fact, the leaf is on our side of the mesh. The light source is what's on the other side of the mesh, casting a shadow onto the plant. My first clue was the veins in the leaves. However, it's also clear from the sprouts. But maybe that's what was said in the description. What does BH refer to? -- Victor
