Thanks, Nico, for your wonderful comments. They felt really good. :)

As for the Lensbaby, not really. It's not just a matter of the blur, but chromatic distortions as well. PS can do a similar blur, but it cannot capture the pulsating sensation of a Lensbaby. This particular image, b/c it's cropped a lot, doesn't really pulse, and there is no chromatic change b/c it is a monochrome conversion, so, I guess, in this instance, you might be able to fake it in PS, but in a color full-crop image, no. ~ Lonnit

Hi Lonnit, I know I made a similar comment some time ago, but I just wanted to say again that I really enjoy how you explore unusual everythings... compositions, crops, colours, tilts, etc. etc. I recognize that I am very "traditional" in my approach (perhaps just due to being relatively new to this "sport"), and therefore it is challenging and interesting for me to see how you and others do things. Thanks for being "brave" enough to submit entries the way YOU want it to look, even though you know it might not appeal to some.

By the way, I was wondering whether one needs an actual lensbaby lens to achieve this type of look, or whether it is possible to simulate this look-and-feel so closely with PS plug-ins that nobody would be able to tell the difference?

Regards ~jnconradie

Oh, ok, I get that. Right, like if they were playing tag. The actual case is that he's running to catch back up with the rest of us, on a family walk. The hand is Dad's. ~ Lonnit

I only speculate that a child's arm would work better because that is more likely who a child would be running after like that. -- Victor

I think the "burst" effect that the Lensbaby gives is causing that impression. You're right, but I think it adds to the energy of the image - it appears that both the child and the photographer were running. Interesting b/c photographers are usually standing still.

Aren't you one of those angle-haters? LOL! Well then, I'm complimented. :) Again, I have to agree with you there - if the photog was running, s/he'd likely not get the horizon straight in the process. Again, these conversations are such wonderful learning tools. I'm understanding more about the image's energy now. Thanks! :D

I'm happy with the adult arm; I think I'd disagree on that point. It does make me curious though as to why you think a child's arm might be better. Would it enhance the story in some manner?

There was nothing much on the right; nothing of interest that would add to the story was lost. I don't have a copy of this uncropped - I'd deleted it.

Thanks so much for the great input! ~ Lonnit

Lonnit, I get more the impression that this is the hurried view of someone running away from your subject. The angle actually works for me for once because of this, as does the arm, although I think it would be better as a child's arm. I'm not so sure about the crop, though. I'd like to see what a version with more on the right, particularly if distorted by the lensbaby, would look like. -- Victor

Iso, yes, it is a weird crop, but yet there was something about cropping it this way that I liked. It's not your average, humdrum, typical crop - which I thought added interest. Being a more artistic looking image, I thought a more artistic crop was valid. I cropped in from both sides. There were two people on the left side of the image. Thier slower pace seemed to sap the energy from the image. I liked how this emphasized the speedy feel, and how the arm offered a bit of story line, like he's running to catch up with his father. I thought the lensbaby added to the speediness as well. For the record, I also did a more traditional crop but putting them side by side, this was undeniably better.

Thanks for commenting. Wonderful to see you so active here again! ~ Lonnit

Weird crop format, strange hanging arm in the foreground and what I assume is a leg make this a very odd photo to appreciate. I'm not one for lensbaby shots on the whole but it least this makes it look a bit *speedy* with the defocused bits.
