Simply Awe-Inspiring *

From Earth

This photograph displays Prominences along the edge of the Sun -- magnetic loops of superhot gas. Two Earths could fit at the same time through the loop on the left.

Canon EOS 20D ,Televue Pronto 680mm with H-Alpha Filter
Shot through a Hydrogen-Alpha filter, allowing to pass just a very narrow bandwidth in the red part of the spectrum. full exif

JMConradie, thanks!

Bob -- No, I m using the normal out of the box 20D (and I used a normal D60 before that). For solar h-alpha work, the blocking filter on the camera does nothing to impede the narrow bandwidth let in by the hydrogen-alpha filter.

"Out of this world" in more ways than one! I am really impressed and would love to be able to do this one day. Compliments and regards ~jnconradie

Just a question Andrew... are you using the modified 20D (with UV filter removed)? ... Bob

An additional note on what you are looking at: The surface of the sun has been "blacked out" in Photoshop. When photographing Prominences, which are much dimmer than the happenings on ths surface, you must take a much longer exposure (e.g. 1/80 second) than you would if you were trying to capture details on the surface (e.g. 1/400 second). When I photograph the sun, I routinely take two exposures, one exposed for the surface and one exposed for the prominences, and combine them in Photoshop. For this Challenge, I felt that showing the combined version would not fit with the theme.

Thanks everyone,

For those interested in looking at more solar photos, feel free at my site:http://www.macnmotion.com/myphotosdigitalastrosolar.html

Dorys, sure it's nice to have the h-alpha filter, but I live in western NY where it's sunny about 30 days a year!

I love your title! It points out how there can be simplicity in something as complex as our star. A beautiful image that says a lot with just a few lines! ~Sharon
